WORKING WITH IRON AND CAST IRON
Iron finds are usually just lumps of rust.
Method 1: Electrolysis ⚡
The most effective method.
- A 9–12 V power supply
- Water + baking soda (electrolyte)
- **NEGATIVE** lead — to the find, **POSITIVE** lead — to the anode (an axe head/scrap iron)
- The pieces must not touch each other!
- Time: until the bare metal is exposed
- **Afterward:** preservation (oiling) is mandatory
Method 2: Azelit (for cast iron)
Soak for 1 minute, then brush off the crust.
Method 3: Heat + brush
- Heat with a torch until red-hot
- Scrub off the oxides with a wire brush
- Repeat, finishing with a final heating
- Dunk in hydraulic oil — for preservation
Method 4: Caustic soda
Soak, leave it for a while, then take it out and brush it clean.
Preserving iron
Bluing: heat to 200–300°C and dip in machine oil, or rub with linseed oil.
